When people think about firearms that are easy to carry, they typically think of pistols. This is completely understandable. That is the intent of pistols: small, portable firearms that can, often, be carried on your person so that you can always have a weapon with you.

But there are times that it would be nice to have a rifle handy without having to strap a full-length weapon to your back. If you’ve ever felt that way, then you may want to take a look at the U.S. Survival AR-7 by Henry Repeating Arms.

Now, you may be familiar with the concept of a survival rifle as they started to be seen around World War II and, if so, you’ll be familiar with the fact that this type of firearm is designed to be broken down for easy storage and carrying. A few manufacturers have made these type of weapons, but Henry has tweaked their design. A writer named Mike S writes,

Henry Arms picked up the design around that time  [2004] and has been making the AR-7 for more than a decade. While early rifles had some feeding problems, the current versions have shown a lot of improvement.

For one, they ditched the fiberglass stock (which was prone to cracking on every other variant, including Armalite) and went with ABS plastic. The butt stock has room to store three magazines instead of one (the trick is to leave the third magazine in the action).

Most importantly, they eliminated the old-style aluminum barrel with a steel liner, which had a tendency to bend or warp and opted for an all-steel barrel, which may weigh a bit more but increases accuracy and reliability. In addition, all of the rifle’s parts are coated in Teflon, and they added a legit scope rail to the top of the receiver.

As you can see in the picture above, this little rifle really is collapsible to an extraordinary level and, while not as small as a pistol, is still easily stashed in a bag or carried by hand without getting in the way.

So, if you’re looking for an easily portable rifle, give this weapon a chance. It just might be what you’re looking for.

  1. flimsy receiver easily broken…get a steel receiver and it is reasonable for back packing ..
.better choice is Ruger 10 22 stainless steel take down carbine with 16 inch barrel
