One of the bizarre and frustrating (and, in this case, dangerous) things about our modern society is how easily people can proclaim themselves to be experts on a subject, and the ignorant blindly swallow that lie hook, line, and sinker.
You can see that situation in nearly every field when you search through YouTube videos. There are people who are, very definitely, experts, and there are other people who, if you have even the tiniest bit of knowledge on the subject, are obviously woefully unqualified to give advise on the subject.
You see that every day in the world of politics and the mainstream legacy media when they talk about firearms and how to minimize gun violence, especially school shootings and other mass shooting situations. Anti-gunners put forth clueless people like David Hogg as if they have any idea about what they’re talking about when they don’t.
One person who does, clearly, know what he is talking about when it comes to firearms is Massad Ayoob. You can see some of Ayoob’s bio below:
Massad Ayoob has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s, and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.
The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several state and regional handgun shooting championships. Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He served 19 years as chair of the Firearms Committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and several years as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. In addition to teaching for those groups, he has also taught for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the International Homicide Investigators seminars.
Ayoob is one of the people who knows what he’s talking about when it comes to firearms use, and he has some very definite opinions about how to stop school shootings. You can watch his video below (language warning).
Ayoob nailed it. Gun free zones are hunting preserves for psychopathic murderers. Let’s call them what they are.
When it comes to school shootings, the way to prevent them is to have someone armed and trained on site who can respond immediately. Despite what anti-2A zealots keep saying, no one is trying to force any teacher to carry a firearm who doesn’t want to carry, but to prevent a teacher (ideally, multiple teachers) from voluntarily training and carrying firearms on school premises is to set up a situation where would-be mass murderers will continue to specifically target our children in schools. Because those are easy hunting grounds.
It’s not appalling that anti-2A zealots want to prevent willing teachers from carrying on campus in order to protect children. No, it’s not appalling. It’s contributing to the murder of those innocent children.
We need to stop pretending that gun free zones and not carrying firearms are good things. They aren’t. The only people “helped” by gun free zones and by preventing legal carrying of firearms at all times are the criminals who get to up their kill counts because of those policies.
