For anyone who has ever wondered if the U.S. has a different justice system for the politically-connected (or, at least, those associated with one anti-2A political party in particular), exhibit A has to be Hunter Biden.
Hunter Biden has admitted to drug use, has been accused multiple times of selling his father’s political influence for personal profit, and to stay on topic for this site, he’s known to have had a firearm illegally while being addicted to drugs, even lying on ATF forms.
If you or I had done that, we’d already be in jail. That Hunter Biden isn’t currently in jail says that there’s been a completely different (and much more lenient) standard for him than applies to you or me.
But that may be about to change. Zachary Stieber writes,
President Joe Biden’s son may be charged with a felony gun crime, according to a new filing from U.S. prosecutors.
Prosecutors plan to ask a grand jury to indict Hunter Biden for the crime soon, special counsel David Weiss’s team said in a Sept. 6 filing.
“The Speedy Trial Act requires that the Government obtain the return of an indictment by a grand jury by Friday, September 29, 2023, at the earliest. The Government intends to seek the return of an indictment in this case before that date,” Mr. Weiss’s team told a federal court in Delaware.
Mr. Biden, 50, possessed a firearm in October 2018 despite being addicted to an illegal drug, a violation of federal law, prosecutors have said.
They agreed to allow him to enter pretrial diversion agreement but that deal has fallen apart.
A conviction could land Mr. Biden in prison for up to 10 years.
Now, look, while I’m no fan for his father’s politics on guns, I think that gun laws in the U.S. are ludicrous. The Second Amendment is absolute in my mind.
Having said that, though, the same laws need to apply to politicians’ sons just like they do you and me. Fair is fair, and that’s just equal treatment under the law (something else that anti-gunners oppose considering that they supported “mostly peaceful” riots protest over the last several years).
So, will Hunter Biden go to jail for what you and I would go to jail for? We’ll have to see, but it’s good to see that something looks like it’s finally happening on that front to hold someone in Biden’s family accountable.
