When life has been going smoothly for you for a period of time, it can be easy to forget that there are some really unhinged people out there, people who will do things that neither you nor I would do.
Things like… shoot a gun at a restaurant worker because you’re upset with them… while your nine year old child is between you and the server that you’re (apparently not very accurately) firing at.
And no, I’m not kidding. That really is the scenario that we’re talking about today. Dave Urbanski writes,
A St. Louis mother is facing multiple felony charges after police say she fired a gun inside a Kirkwood, Missouri, sushi restaurant amid an argument with staff last week, KTVI-TV reported.
Kirkwood police told the station the shooting took place just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said Aaliyah N. Moorehead, 31, told officers she believed restaurant staff were rude to her and her family when they arrived, KTVI reported, adding that Moorehead was with her 9-year-old child.
Moorehead also said she used a translation feature on her AirPods to determine that the cooks made racial and derogatory comments in Spanish about her and her family, the station said.
Now, look, if the staff at that restaurant made racist statements against Moorehead, I understand why she would be upset about that. Racism is wrong.
But shooting a gun over the head of your nine year old child because of words that someone said (words, not any physical actions), that’s insane. It’s dangerous to not just the people that you wish physical harm against (which is a problem in and of itself) but also to your own child. Simply because you couldn’t control your temper.
Look, I’m a Second Amendment absolutist. I don’t believe in restrictions on the Second Amendment. Having said that, my position doesn’t mean that everyone should decide to carry a firearm.
Because people who can’t control their temper are just putting both themselves and everyone around them in danger, so until they can get control of their emotions, they would be better off choosing not to carry (I just don’t think that it should be government mandated).
