Is California Governor Gavin Newsom taking drugs?
I ask myself that question pretty regularly, actually, and since he is in a state which has as one of its iconic areas Haight-Ashbury, which you may remember was famous as a gathering area for hippies and other drug aficionados back in the 1960s, it may be a valid question.
But maybe Newsom isn’t taking drugs. He doesn’t stumble around, drool on himself, laugh incessantly, or act in any kind of manic way with intensely crazy eyes like Charles Manson.
So, maybe Newsom is either making multiple really bad decisions or really wants to do damage to his state.
Whether that’s the case or not, he’s doing those last things. A lot. Just take a recent package of legislation that he signed into law. Michael Clements writes,
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a package of 10 gun bills into law that he says will enhance what he considers to be the state’s already exemplary record of firearms safety.
Newsom’s office announced the signing in a press release on Monday. According to the release, the laws are meant to reduce violent crime involving guns and reduce the number of illegal guns on the street, among other things.
They include a training requirement for the purchase of a gun, expanding criteria for the state’s extreme risk protection orders, voluntary firearms storage by law enforcement to prevent violent crime and suicide, and a requirement for firearms blocking technology on 3D printers in the state by July 1, 2029.
Now, his “justification” has to do with continuing California’s “exemplary record of firearms safety.”
That’s quite a thing to say considering that in 2024 they had the third largest number of firearms deaths in the country.
And they had the most murders of any state in that same year.
Now, in the interest of fairness, they are also the state with the highest population in the country, but as anti-2A activists like to point out (and they’re right about this one thing): Every life is important.
So, maybe Newsom should actually look at getting to the root of what is causing that high murder rate instead of imposing more gun control for political optics purposes.
