This may seem like a trick question to ask, but it’s not. How should you load your pistol?
It’s a great question to ask because there really is a right way (or, to be fair a few variations on the right way) along with multiple ways to screw it up.
Now, don’t make the mistake of thinking that going over this is just for the benefit of those new to firearms. It is for them, yes, but it’s a good review even for seasoned shooters. Because, remember, the best in most every field focus relentlessly on mastering the fundamentals. And loading your pistol is absolutely a fundamental in firearms.
So, on to the topic: How do you load your pistol? To answer that question, we have Carter from Patriot Training Center to show us and walk us through it (and a few variations on it) below.
Now, Carter’s instructions were straightforward. I do want to emphasize a few points that he made, though.
First, when you load the magazine into the magazine well (the hole at the bottom of your pistol’s grip), you will want to make sure that you load the magazine in with enough force for it to lock into place.
As Carter said, if that magazine falls out, even if you have a bullet in the chamber, once you pull that trigger, you no longer have a loaded pistol. Effectively, that means that you have a very expensive paperweight in your hand in the middle of a gunfight (because you are only drawing your firearm in self-defense, right?).
Also, as Carter noted, once you load the magazine into the well and pull the slide back, you need to let the spring pull the slide forward on its own power instead of you easing the slide forward.
The pistol is designed to feed a bullet from your magazine into the chamber when you let the slide be pulled forward by the spring. Interfering with that process can cause you problems. And one thing that you never want to have problems with is your firearm, especially if you find yourself in one of those horrible situations when you need it.
