The ATF is a lightning rod for controversy. Not that it should be. It’s just the nature of what that organization regulates.
Alcohol gives people flashbacks to Prohibition and mafia violence. Tobacco in more recent memory dregs up memories of lawsuits against RJR Nabisco and other tobacco companies. Explosives just because they have to do with blowing things up. And, of course, our favorite subject: firearms.
So maybe it’s not too big of a surprise that most Democrats and Republicans both get the ATF wrong.
Now, to be clear about the different positions, Michael Clements writes,
At the same time, those on both sides of the gun debate are criticizing the agency. Gun control advocates say that under President Donald Trump, the Department of Justice is failing to deal with domestic issues involving guns.
Gun rights advocates say the ATF is a redundant agency, doing work that other agencies can do, and the laws from which it draws its authority violate Americans’ Second Amendment rights.
Gun control organizations did not respond to requests for comment by publication. However, their websites list their concerns, which include the dismantling of Biden’s gun control agenda.
Now, those on the anti-2A side of things gets nearly everything about firearms wrong. They try to forget that the Second Amendment exists. They ignore out of hand (without even checking to see what the truth is) any statistics that prove that legal firearm ownership in a society lowers overall levels of violence, including murder rates.
In other words, they keep advocating for policies that will make the situations that they say that they’re concerned about even worse.
Those on the pro-2A side of things are closer to the right answer. They’re absolutely right that the ATF tramples on the rights of Americans.
But they come up short, too.
What both sides nearly always get wrong starts with the assumption that the ATF should remain in place or, at least, that what the ATF does should be handled by some part of the government. The truth, though? Because of the Second Amendment, the ATF should have never existed in the first place.
The right answer is that the ATF should be completely dissolved, and what the ATF does, at least when it comes to firearms, should be completely dropped off the government’s radar.
And if anti-2A activists really want a safer world, then, they should learn real-world self-protection methods, and a good place to start might be to take a firearms course with Patriot Training Center.
