Why do so many people automatically assume that because a person is “authorized” or certified in some way, that person should be considered as more qualified? Or qualified at all?
We see this in all area of life. Think about college degrees. I’ll pick on teachers for this example (no disrespect towards teachers. I’ve had many wonderful degreed teachers. I’m just making a point here.). I’ve heard some people say that they could never teach their children (usually in a conversation about homeschooling) because they don’t have a teaching degree.
Not because they work full time or are a caregiver for a family member in a health crisis or some other completely valid reason. Or even Because they don’t want to teach their kids. Their reason is that they don’t have a teaching degree.
As if their kids didn’t learn to walk, talk, feed themselves, become potty trained, read books, etc. with those same parents who don’t feel like they could teach their kids the subjects to get through high school.
Now, if we’re talking technical college courses, like engineering or medical degrees, I completely understand the argument. If we’re talking about teaching calculus, which is primarily used in the real world by engineers and architects, then there may be a point to be made.
But to say that a parent can’t teach anything to their school aged kids after having taught them things as preschoolers just doesn’t make sense.
It’s just like anti-2A people saying that they only want law enforcement to have firearms because law enforcement officers (typically) have training in that. As if the average legal gun owner can’t get training. As if law enforcement officers aren’t human beings who make the same mistakes that average non-law enforcement people do.
And if you need proof that law enforcement officers are sometimes just as dangerous as other people, watch the video below.
The officers in that video clearly violated the four basic rules of guns, and that’s why someone got hurt. And that happened even though law enforcement officers should receive training on those rules in their normal firearms training just like civilians do (if you need a refresher of those rules, you can get that here).
The fact of the matter is that being in law enforcement doesn’t make someone a better (or worse) person than someone else. It makes someone “authorized” by government to do things that everyone else is legally prevented from doing.
Thank God for the many good law enforcement officers out there, but don’t imagine that you or anyone else can’t be safe to carry a firearm daily. You can. And you should.
