Let’s Set The Record Straight About The 2nd Amendment

Those who are of an anti-2A persuasion have this idea that the Second Amendment is for hunting. Or they think that it applied to government-organized military and quasi-military organizations (state-run militias). Or they believe that it was some bizarre accident of a group of founding fathers of this country who wanted guns in order to oppress other groups of people.

The fact of the matter is that all of these ideas are wrong.

The Second Amendment is not about hunting, militias, or citizens oppressing other people. It’s the exact opposite. The Second Amendment is why the United States hasn’t fallen to tyranny. John Zmirak explains:

There are other means of restraining, controlling, and limiting the privileges of governments over their citizens. For instance, the separation of powers first cited by Montesquieu, and intentionally built by Madison and other American founders into the very structure of U.S. government. The idea of positing an armed citizenry as the final guarantor of all these other liberties, and enshrining the means of mass popular resistance in the Constitution itself? That was distinctly American. It’s one of the distinguishing marks of our culture, and rightly a source of national pride.

Individual liberty is much more deeply rooted and antifragile in America, in part because of the power to resist which is protected by the Second Amendment. At the height of the COVID panic, there was no question of locking unvaccinated Americans in their homes or in quarantine camps. That happened not just in Austria but Australia. The knowledge that mass resistance to mass oppression is still possible here operates (partly subconsciously) to restrain the fantasies of aspiring tyrants. And stiffen the courage of independent-minded citizens. Abuses of religious freedom and parental rights that occur regularly in Canada still seem unthinkable in most parts of America. Why? On some visceral level, our own social engineers realize that the people still have teeth.

The centrality of gun rights to liberty in America is in some ways the fruit of a series of contingent historical events. Happy or providential accidents I would call them. These events in the political and religious history of the English people, then the Anglo-American colonists, served to culturally cement the use of private firearms and citizens militias. To demonstrate their unique power to restrain the abuse of citizens’ basic rights by governments.

The Second Amendment has prevented tyranny from coming to the United States because the Second Amendment gives the citizenry, the people, “teeth.”

That is the ultimate reason for the Second Amendment, and anyone who actually wants to prevent oppression should unreservedly support the Second Amendment and the free exercise of it throughout our entire country.

  1. On the Second Amendment..there is one incredibly excellent reason to have an armed citizenry, and that is being played out right now in Ukraine. The citizens there are now feeling abandoned, and being left to the citizenry to arm-up against an invasion by Russia.
Back in 1959 Russian Premier Nikita Kruschev said himself: “America could never be invaded, because there would be a rifle or gun behind every tree, rock, and shrub.” And he was right. We ARE an armed populace, and would man-up as Americans to defend our nation against invaders. That is why the Communists started infiltrsting our country, and “changing our systems, to take us over from the inside. Our entire education system, Media, Unions, TV, Hollywood, Liberals, Justice System, CIA, FBI, and the current Marxist Communist Regime destroying our nation from the inside is being used against us. We MUST recognize how important our freedom is in retaining, and honing our skills truly is. We the People are our last line of resistance against enemies, both foreign and domestic.

    • Japanese Admiral Yamamoto was the first to insinuate that same thing …
You do have the takeover system right start, with the education and those ideas will trickle down …

  2. AMERICAN COLONISTS, SERVED TO CULTURALLY CEMENT THE USE OF PRIVATE FIREARMS AND CITIZENS MILITIAS. TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR UNIQUE POWER TO RESTRAIN THE ABUSE OF CITIZENS’ BASIC RIGHTS BY GOVERNMENTS.

And we have that right to use them today in the same manner

  3. That is the truth and 100% truth about the 2nd part of the constitution. Thank god the founding fathers used their heads. Its a given right by god to be free and live as a human being and NOT under anyone like a slave.

  4. Tyrants and fools will never stop trying to destroy the 2nd Amendment. Look through history and at communist/marxist/socialist countries where their people rights are extremely limited. China has bribed it’s way into many countries and now influences them. Many restrict gun ownership. Even here in the USA several states restrict the 2nd Amendment. Hawaii has laws against open carry. Others, certain guns, size of mags, etc. And now, for safety, they want you to lock your guns in a safe when not using them. How does that keep you safe in an emergency??? It will never stop because we allowed these communists to dump down America and our children to give up their only right to protect freedom.

  5. Those who say a ‘militia’ is solely for governments, recall the “Minute Men” of colonial times! EVERY able-bodied adult kept arms close, yes, for hunting, but moreso for repelling the occasional foray of Native American raiders, maurading theives, and to prevent oppressive governments from just marching in and seizing arms, property, etc! This included their OWN! This, a result of the British government attempting to confiscate arms and munitions from angry colonists refusing to pay taxes without representation! The Minute Men were CITIZENS! Not the government!

  6. the most important part of the 2ndis the comma separating militia and shall not be infringed. two separate and different thoughts

  7. I lived in Indiana for 14 years, and I concealed carried a pistol for most of those years, but a few years ago I moved back to New Jersey, where you can’t get a carry permit, these types of States are committing a crime against our Constitution, the founding fathers didn’t write that as a joke, it is the LAW in this country, the 2nd amendment was written to protect us against this type of government, but states like N.J. continually break the law, I believe those who vote to ban firearms and the right to carry one if we so choose should be thrown in jail. The U.S.A., the land of the Free, not any longer I’d say, please never vote for these lawbreakers again!
