Well, you may have already heard the news: Donald Trump’s original choice to be Attorney General in his 2nd administration was Matt Gaetz, who many thought would have been a fantastic AG for 2nd Amendment rights, for cleaning out the Department of Justice and ending its lawfare tactics, and for getting the ATF into line.
But Gaetz has stepped down from that nomination, now, disappointing many political conservatives and causing many bureaucrats and non-conservative politicians in Washington to breathe a sigh of relief.
After Gaetz stepped out of that spotlight, though, Trump quickly nominated former Florida Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to be his new Attorney General. What’s that mean for you? Cam Edwards writes,
Donald Trump’s second choice for Attorney General is likely to find a warmer reception in the Senate than Matt Gaetz did, but she could face some hostility from Second Amendment organizations over some of her previous positions on guns and gun control.Â
Pam Bondi served as Florida’s attorney general for eight years, and was in office when the legislature crafted its response to the 2018 shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.Â
“In a time of crisis, it’s about finding common ground, and that’s what Gov. Scott has done,” Bondi told Fox Business host Stuart Varney in March of that year, as the Florida legislature was in the midst of passing legislation that, among other things, raised the age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21 and established a “red flag” law in the state.Â
Now, to be fair, Bondi may have taken her job as Florida Attorney General in a very literal sense, meaning that if a piece of legislation was passed, she may have felt that it was her job to enforce that law and defend it in court whether she personally supported that law or not.
I don’t know. I neither personally know Bondi nor can I recall ever seeing her in an interview about those subjects to get an impression about how she feels about gun topics.
What I do know, though, is that I want an Attorney General in Washington who takes the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution seriously and literally, meaning that the Federal government won’t try to interfere with or in any way limit the gun rights of Americans.
I guess we’ll have to see, though, if Bondi will take that stance in D.C. if she becomes Trump’s Attorney General.
