Other than Glock, there seems to be one gun manufacturer that has the most “clones” and knockoffs on the market today. Now, that’s not to say that clones of either Glock’s firearms or knockoffs of the company that we’re talking about today aren’t great guns. On the contrary, the clones are often excellent firearms.
I bring up the clone issue only to point out that both Glock and the manufacturer that we’re talking about today design firearms that often become standards that other people, then, work from, and that says a lot about how good those designs are.
The company that we’re talking about today is (as you already know) not Glock. No, it’s Walther, and they’ve released a pistol that has been called “equal parts race pistol and nightstand gun.” David Lane writes,
The Walther PDP Pro-X is one of the most feature-packed pistols to ever cross my hands. Replaceable backstraps, flared aluminum magwell, Parker Mountain Machine compensator, optics ready via Walther’s optics mounting system, Dynamic Performance Trigger and extended slide release, its assets go on and on.
What is even more surprising is that these features actually deliver on what the company claims. Most gunmakers say their guns have an improved trigger these days, but Walther comes out of the gate swinging in this department. This is actually the best trigger I’ve found on a factory striker-fired pistol. Honestly, it’s better than a lot of factory 1911/2011 triggers.
The magwell is wide and useful, the PMM comp actually works, and even the slide serrations are extra deep for maximizing their usefulness. Walther didn’t just add “features” to check off boxes on a list, they added features that matter and do their jobs like they mean it.
And they did it for an MSRP of $1,000.
Now, lest you think that Lane thought that everything was sunshine and unicorns with the PDP Pro-X, he did mention that he would prefer it to have a double undercut for the trigger guard and suppressor-height iron sights. This pistol is designed with a red dot in mind, and that won’t phase many people, but if you’re an iron sights enthusiast, that may be a drawback for you with this pistol.
But if you’re looking for a pistol from Walther that can run, the PDP Pro-X may be one to put on your shopping list.
One last thing, if you want to see this pistol in action, you can watch it used in range time in the video below.
