What do you do if you are fired from a government job over gun control?
If you’re like most people, you look into filing a lawsuit because your Second Amendment rights are important to you, and they should be upheld and protected.
I understand that answer, and in most cases where gun control played a part in someone being fired because they want to keep and carry their guns, I’m all for those lawsuits.
But this situation is the reverse of that. This lawsuit isn’t because someone is upset that their government employer wants to keep them from exercising their Second Amendment rights.
No, this lawsuit is because a former federal employee says that she was fired because she wants to prevent someone else from exercising their Second Amendment rights. Dan Rosenzweig-Ziff writes,
Elizabeth Oyer, who served as pardon attorney from 2022-2025 and has become an outspoken critic of the administration and Attorney General Todd Blanche, alleged she was asked to ignore her concerns about [Mel] Gibson’s history of domestic violence, among other issues, and recommend he regain firearm access, according to the suit filed on Thursday.
After she refused, and refused another request from a staff member of Blanche, then the deputy attorney general, Oyer received termination papers from security officers. She was told she was being fired under Trump’s Article 2 authority, a section of the Constitution that establishes the presidency.
“This case is about much more than what happened to me,” Oyer said in a statement. “If career officials like me can be fired for refusing to bend the rules to serve the president’s friends, then the message to every public servant is clear: loyalty to a politician matters more than loyalty to the Constitution.”
Of course, this is another normal anti-2A activist trying to twist the Constitution to fit their preferred gun control narrative.
She says that she’s trying to protect the Constitution while completely ignoring the part of the Second Amendment that says that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
It does make it rather ironic, though, that the person that she wants to keep from having his firearms is Mel Gibson who starred in The Patriot which is about the American Revolution. (He starred in the first three Mad Max movies, too, so there is that…)
But I can’t say that I’m surprised. When anti-2A people tell you that they’re for gun ownership, their other statements and actions reveal that to be a lie. It’s the same with this situation. To try to say the Constitution is why she’s keeping a U.S. citizen from having guns is a complete oxymoron.
I don’t know Ms Oyer, but I have to say that her statements about the Constitution make me think that it would be better if she isn’t allowed to be a federal employee who has sworn to uphold a constitution that she clearly either doesn’t understand or wants to make impotent.
