Nasty Neighbors And Firearms

Human nature being what it is, there are always going to be disagreements. One of the signs of maturity, though, is the ability to disagree over something without resorting to violence or the ability to find ways to solve disagreements calmly.

Sadly, many people in our world haven’t developed that restraint (we can have long conversations as to why that is, but that is for another time… and probably another website).

We see that lack of restraint everyday both in our personal lives and on the news, and, thankfully, those situations rarely go beyond someone yelling and stomping away.

When those situations go beyond yelling and stomping away, though, it’s not a good day. Unfortunately for someone in Colorado, they had a very bad day (hat tip to here for the lead). Luke McCoy writes,

According to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 1:21 a.m. to a report of a shooting in the 4200 block of Grand Teton Road. When they arrived, they encountered the resident who reported the shooting and was also identified as the victim.

The resident told investigators that the suspect, a neighbor with whom he had an ongoing conflict, forcibly entered his home by kicking in the door. The suspect reportedly had an object in his hand when he entered, prompting a physical struggle between the two men. During the altercation, the resident shot the suspect.

Both individuals sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The suspect was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The resident remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Now, McCoy didn’t note what the point of contention in the dispute was, but apparently someone was upset enough about it that they broke into someone else’s home at 1:00 in the morning to “deal with it.”

Someone with some calm might have decided to get some sleep before looking at the situation again with a clear head. Unfortunately, that apparently didn’t happen here.

And, from what we know, it sounds like a situation in which the homeowner might have been the person who died (they are still in the hospital, after all) if they hadn’t been able to shoot the other person.

This is yet another reminder of why you need to have access to your firearm at all times and why you should train to become and maintain proficiency with it.
