What is your definition of a really bad day? Is it running out of coffee at home so you don’t have coffee on the way to work (I personally hate that situation)? Is it when it is freezing cold outside so it takes several minutes for your car to warm up leaving you cold for several minutes? Is it when you wake up late and, therefore, start your day rushing and on the wrong foot?
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that none of those make my list of things to happen on a happy day, but I’ll bet that being robbed at gunpoint would probably top any of those ideas for bad day happenings.
But, as some people say, “It can always get worse!”
What if, after the attempt at robbing you at gunpoint, you were arrested even though you were the one who was attacked? I think that you’d agree that would take the day to a whole new level of terrible.
Unfortunately, for a man in Los Angeles, California, that’s exactly what happened. Luke McCoy writes,
A suspected armed robbery in the Winnetka neighborhood of Los Angeles turned deadly Saturday afternoon when a man allegedly targeted in the attempted crime fatally shot his attacker after a struggle. The man was later arrested, and the incident remains under investigation.
Now, McCoy says that the charges against the man who was arrested have not been released, nor have further details of the incident, so, it’s not clear as to why a situation which, on the surface, at least, sounds like a self-defense shooting, led to charges against the person who was attacked.
Was he someone who wasn’t legally allowed to hold a firearm even when it was held due to being taken from an attacker and, then, used in self-defense?
Off hand, I’m not sure why else he might have been arrested, and if that’s the case, I’d like to think that the extenuating circumstances would buy him some leniency in the situation.
But I don’t know those details, so it’s just speculation on my part.
What is clear is that, even if your situation sounds like you are in the right, you could still face legal repercussions if you’re involved in a self-defense shooting.
That’s one of the big reasons to try to avoid situations in which protecting yourself may be necessary. After all, the better part of valor may be being able to be the one who goes home that evening because you completely avoided a confrontation in the first place.
