If you listen to the legacy mainstream media or to anti-2A politicians and activists, then you’ve likely heard some variation on the idea that gun violence is a widespread problem in the United States (and that it is a problem unique to the United States).
Of course, neither of those ideas are true.
Gun violence is not widespread in the United States. I’ve talked about this before, and the true numbers will shock people. S.D. Wells writes,
[The] USA has [the] 3rd highest murder rate in the world, unless you subtract the five biggest Democrat-run metropolitan cities, and then we’re 189th out of 193.
That’s right, remove gun control zones, and the U.S. is suddenly revealed to be nearly the safest country in the world to live in (which means that gun violence can’t be unique to the U.S. either).
In other words, gun control helps criminals commit gun crimes, and a small part of the population is responsible for nearly all of the gun crime.
And that latter statement isn’t just true in the U.S. Take a recent story out of South Africa and the U.K. The Associated Press reports:
A man wanted by British police over the killings of his wife and two daughters pleaded guilty Tuesday to firearms offenses in South Africa, where he was arrested in July while on the run.
That’s right, a guy wanted for killing his family has been arrested in another country for other crimes, too.
Now, we can (and should) talk about whether a “firearms offense” is or even should be a crime, but the point is that the guy wanted for breaking the law in one country was arrested for breaking the law in another country.
In other words, to say the shockingly obvious out loud: people who (allegedly) commit one crime tend to be the people who (allegedly) commit other crimes.
And that includes people who murder people. They tend to repeat the behavior.
So, no gun violence isn’t a widespread issue or, really, even an issue at all in the U.S. Unless you live in one of those five cities mentioned earlier. In those places, it is a pervasive issue.
But I suspect that a change to allow constitutional carry in those areas would probably change that gun violence problem in those areas within a matter of weeks.
