There is a saying coined in political circles that you should never let a good crisis go to waste.
Now, if you’re not familiar with that saying, what it basically means is that people will be more likely to accept radical changes in a society when they are feeling panicked, so a crisis situation is an opportunity for politicians to push their agendas that they haven’t been able to push as much as they want.
We’ve been seeing this lately with some states and municipalities trying to use the Coronavirus situation as an excuse to push gun control, and California (no surprise, there) is joining the crusade, though, California Governor Gavin Newsome is talking about this as an opportunity to push California into a more “progressive era,” which, as you probably know always includes strict gun control and government intervention in your life at all levels (hat tip to here for the lead). An article on the News Republic site gives us the details:
“Forgive me for being long-winded, but absolutely we see this as an opportunity to reshape the way we do business and how we govern,” Newsom said. “And that shouldn’t put shivers up the spines of you know one party or the other. I think it’s an opportunity anew for both parties to come together and meet this moment and really start to think more systemically, not situationally, not just about getting out of this moment, but more sustainably and systemically to consider where we can go together in this historic moment if we meet it at a national level, in a state, and sub-national level. So, the answer is yes [i see this as an opportunity to push progressive agendas].”
Newsom isn’t the first Democrat to publicly state that coronavirus is a political opportunity. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) said recently that the negotiations for the stimulus bill represented “a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.”
Democrats were advocating for environmental and labor reforms in the stimulus bill that did not directly relate to aiding Americans or struggling businesses. Something Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was highly upset by the attempt.
“Here are some of the items on the Democratic wish list, over which they choose to block this legislation last night,” McConnell said on March 23. “Tax credits for solar energy and wind energy. Provisions to force employers to give special new treatment to big labor. And listen to this: New emissions standards for the airlines. Are you kidding me? … Democrats won’t let us fund hospitals or save small businesses unless they get to dust off the Green New Deal.”
It’s the kind of political positioning and opportunism that we’re seeing from the Left which proves that they don’t really care about average people in America, but only with pushing for their pet agendas.
Of course, we’ve seen this kind of opportunism and hypocrisy on the issue of gun control for years, where progressive politicians will have law enforcement and bodyguards with guns, but they don’t want you and me to have them.
Keep your eyes open. This is the kind of opportunity that anti-gunners long for so they can take away your gun rights.
