Many people have great nostalgia for the way things were in other times in history. For example, some people yearn for the politeness and more formalized clothing choices of the Victorian era. Still others romanticize medieval times with knights, lords, and ladies.
In general, I can’t say that I have any real desire to go live in any other time in history, and my reasons are purely practical: I like indoor plumbing, and I like central heat and air. Of course, the internet has its advantages, too.
I’ll take any of those things over living in Victorian or medieval times.
There are a few things, though, that I wouldn’t mind seeing come back to our modern world, and it looks like we may be about to see that happen for one specific service. Jessica Hill with the Associated Press writes,
Handguns could be mailed through the United States Postal Service for the first time in nearly 100 years if a proposed rule under the Trump administration takes effect. Democratic attorneys general in two dozen states sent a letter this week in opposition.
In 1927, Congress passed a law barring the USPS from mailing concealable firearms unless they were from licensed dealers in an effort to curb crime. In January, the Department of Justice revisited the 1927 law, calling it unconstitutional and arguing that it violated the Second Amendment, and urged the postal service to change its regulations.
The Department of Justice said that as long as Congress chooses to run a parcel service, “the Second Amendment precludes it from refusing to ship constitutionally protected firearms to and from law-abiding citizens, even if they are not licensed manufacturers or dealers.”
This story has so many things that I like: Honoring the Second Amendment, ease of access to firearms, and it upsets anti-2A politicians (you’ll note a number of Attorney Generals from different states writing letters and getting bent out of shape).
Frankly, in my book, these can all be worthwhile reasons to do something (yes, I can be a bit unfriendly towards those who want to curtail my rights).
But this move is clearly the right one as that ban on shipping firearms should have never been put into place in the first place, so, I, for one, am looking forward to this proposed rule change.
