The holy grail for anti-2A zealots is the idea of keeping legal gun owners from being able to get firearms at all (they seem to exempt the government and criminals from getting firearms, though, for some reason).
Second on their list, if they can’t outright ban and confiscate guns, is to delay you from getting your hands on the gun that you’ve legally purchased. Maybe they’re trying to give criminals an extra few days to come after you before you can defend yourself…
I jest with that last crack… Sort of.
Regardless, anti-2A zealots love waiting periods on handgun purchases under the bizarre idea that people legally buying handguns do so on a spur of the moment decision so that they can go commit violence against someone else.
I say that’s bizarre (and it is) because the people who are the aggressors in committing acts of violence against other people are criminals (by definition), and criminals overwhelmingly don’t legally buy their firearms. They tend to get their guns on the black market, and those guns tend to have been stolen before they were on that black market. No waiting period for those folks.
It’s only legal gun owners that have to deal with waiting periods.
But a proposed court settlement in one state would eliminate their waiting periods, and that’s going to have anti-2A zealots gnashing their teeth and foaming at the mouth. Michael Clements writes,
Florida’s three-day waiting period to purchase a gun could be a thing of the past if a U.S. district judge for the Middle District of Florida signs off on an agreement between the plaintiffs and Florida’s attorney general.
Attorney General James Uthmeier offered on June 5 to settle Dunn v. Glass, a lawsuit challenging the waiting period as unconstitutional.
The agreement calls for the state to permanently stop enforcing the waiting period within 14 days of its approval and to pay $10,000 to cover the plaintiffs’ legal costs.
This is definitely good news, and, frankly, that waiting period shouldn’t have been in place in the first place, especially in a “red” state like Florida.
But I’ll take a win like that late in the game like this over continuing to put up with the gun control garbage in so many blue states, so, hopefully, the judge will do the right thing and sign off on this agreement.
