One thing that I’m happy to see in my lifetime is the dismantling of anti-2A laws wherever they pop up across the country.
Now, to be clear, the court system hasn’t universally changed into one that supports the Second Amendment without reservation. So, clearly, there is still work to do to put into place a true and accurate implementation of the Second Amendment as written here in the U.S.
I’m also not saying that the current Supreme Court of the United States has gotten every decision right.
But I’ll take the court wins that we’ve been seeing more of coming down from SCOTUS, and they’ve gotten many more right than previous court sessions in recent memory.
Which makes me hopeful that we’ll see more SCOTUS decisions re-validating and enforcing our Second Amendment rights across the country. And the court is going to have the opportunity to do just that soon. Nate Raymond and Will Dunham with Reuters write,
The gun case coming in the next term gives the justices an opportunity to strike down state restrictions on assault-style rifles such as AR-15s. They took up two appeals after lower courts upheld bans on such weapons in Connecticut and in Cook County, Illinois, which includes the city of Chicago.
Gun rights groups have said Supreme Court precedents concerning the Second Amendment protect these weapons, which they described as in “common use.” Officials in Connecticut and Cook County have called them weapons of war and the guns of choice for criminals and terrorists.
I’ll say that those prosecutors in Connecticut and in Cook County are ignorant, at best, and dishonest fear-mongers, at worst.
Which is the truth? I’ll let you decide.
I’m less concerned about their motivations than I am about the fact that they’re wrong and on the wrong side of the law (the Second Amendment, in this case).
So, here’s hoping that SCOTUS does the right thing here. Every little bit helps.
