Your Body Will BETRAY You In A Gunfight

Imagine this situation: You’re walking out of a store with your wife after shopping for birthday presents for your kids, and someone with a hood pulled up over their head and a mask covering their face steps it from behind a bush to pull a gun on you.

What do you do?

If you’re like most people, you immediately feel an spike of anxiety. And that’s completely understandable. Fight, flight, or freeze kicks in in your body, and that starts outside of your conscious awareness and happens outside of your conscious control.

It’s biology.

It can also be dangerous if you’re looking to do the smartest things to save your life. An article over at Gun Talk explains it this way:

The physiology of violent confrontation has been studied intensively by military researchers, law enforcement training specialists, and sports psychologists over the last 30 years. What that research consistently shows is both sobering and actionable: the untrained person’s body actively works against them in a life-threatening encounter, while the trained person’s body can be conditioned to work with them. The difference is not talent, courage, or resolve. It is repetition.

The article goes on to explain that, when the fight, flight, or freeze stress response hits, fine motor skills degrade, perceptual narrowing (like tunnel vision) occurs, and auditory exclusion can happen.

All of these put you at a disadvantage to the attacker, unless…

You find ways to inoculate yourself to the stress, at least enough to take the necessary actions to save your life.

And how do you do that? Through training, and through repetition.

Training helps you to learn what to do. Repetition helps to wire that in to your neurology so that when you can’t think clearly, your body defaults to your training instead of fight, flight, or freeze.

Remember, you will not rise to your circumstances under stress; you will fall to the level of your training.

Also, practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent. Perfect practice makes perfect.
