Why Constitutional Carry Reduces Gun Crime

There’s an interesting fact of life that anti-2A people don’t seem to understand: People don’t want to die.

Of course, they’ll tell you that they know that no one wants to die, and that’s why they want to take your guns.

They only say that, though, because they haven’t thought through their statement to it’s logical conclusion. See, people don’t want to die, and the group of people who don’t want to die includes murderers.

Now, you may ask how I know this, and the answer is easy: look at how many convicted murderers, including convicted serial killers and those who have killed multiple people in mass shootings, go for plea deals to avoid the death penalty. John Lott gives us several examples of convicted murderers who made this choice. One example:

James Holmes (Colorado, 2012)

On July 20, 2012, Holmes carried out a mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 people and injuring 70. In 2015, Holmes pleaded guilty to 24 counts of first-degree murder and 140 counts of attempted murder, among other charges, to avoid the death penalty. Prosecutors agreed to a plea deal that resulted in 12 consecutive life sentences without parole, plus an additional 3,318 years for attempted murder and explosives charges.

Another example:

Dylann Roof (South Carolina, 2015)

Dylann Roof, who murdered nine at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, agreed to plead guilty in order to avoid the death penalty. Without the threat of the death penalty, there would have been no reason to make a plea.

Lott gives several more examples, and they’re all the same. People convicted of killing people (often convicted of killing multiple people) still want to live.

And that’s exactly why constitutional carry is a deterrent to criminals. They want to live, and if everybody can carry a gun and most do carry a gun, then it’s a safer and smarter decision to do something different than committing crimes with weapons of any kind, including guns.

It’s simple logic to see. You just have to follow it to its logical conclusion, and when you do, it becomes abundantly clear that an armed society is a safer society.
