If you’re reading this page, then I’m going to assume that you agree with me that gun control is both morally wrong and, in light of the Second Amendment, illegal, too.
With that way of thinking, it’s pretty logical to continue that line of thinking to believe that any firearm (and maybe any weapon at all) that is available to the government should be available to civilians, too.
Of course, anti-2A folks don’t believe that, and many people who call themselves pro-2A haven’t thought through the issue far enough to come to that conclusion. Both of those groups still think that certain firearms should be available to law enforcement but not to civilians.
One gun manufacturer is taking exception to that firearm-restrictive line of thinking and is placing limitations on what law enforcement in states with gun control in place can buy from them. They will only sell to law enforcement in those areas what they can legally sell to civilians there (hat tip to here for the lead). That company? CMMG. From their press release:
At this time, CMMG would like to renew our statement on sales of products to states that restrict the freedom of it’s citizens. Simply put: CMMG will only fulfill state and local government agencies and officers to the same configurations as they restrict to their own citizens. We do not have 2 classes of citizens in the country; we are ALL subject to the constitution. CMMG will fulfill orders in restricted areas if the Chief of Police or Sheriff of that respective department makes a public and written statement refusing to enforce those unconstitutional restrictions on the citizens in that jurisdiction. This includes firearms, parts, magazines and suppressors. If a state cannot trust us with equipment, we cannot and will not trust them.
Now, to be fair, the firearms that CMMG sells in restricted states are still nice guns. You can see one of them in the image at the top of this article. So, it’s not as if law enforcement will be shortchanged and denied having an effective firearm by going with consumer compliant weapons in those states.
But it’s absolutely a statement of principle on the part of CMMG that fits the intention of the founding fathers, and it may be the first (and only) gun control that I would support. The people should have access to all of the weapons that the government does. The point of the Second Amendment, after all, was to give the people the ability to resist the government oppressing them and to not allow a government to have the upper hand against the people.
Now, if more manufacturers would take this principled approach, too, it could nudge law enforcement in gun control areas to choose to align with the Second Amendment which they should be doing anyway.
Whether that happens are not, I’m glad to see CMMG take this principled approach. It’s the right thing to do.
