What happens when a state and county put into place policies to keep firearms out of the hands of people who want to do evil things, and they take steps to try to keep children safe useing an anti-2A viewpoint?
Well, if the horrible situation in Bend, Oregon is representative of those types of situations, you pray that someone with a gun that cares about doing the right thing is driving by while the (alleged) murderer is entering the school.
Fortunately, that guy was driving by the school in Bend, Oregon when the shooter entered the building. Daniel Trotta and Steve Gorman with Reuters write,
A 16-year-old shooter opened fire on Thursday at an elementary ‌school in Bend, Oregon, killing four people including three children, before being killed by an armed member of the community who had pursued the assailant into the school, police said.
The shooter entered Silver Rail Elementary School by firing through locked doors, police said, without offering any details beyond the suspect’s age.
Pay attention to that last sentence: “The shooter entered Silver Rail Elementary School by firing through locked doors.”
The doors on the school had locks on them, and the shooter broke the locks by shooting them with his stotgun.
But this was the school “hardening” that the school system had put into place to stop school shootings.
Now, it has been reported that law enforcement was on site within three minutes of the first 911 call. That is quick, so no criticism of them from me about their response time. It sounds like law enforcement did as good a job as anyone could reasonably hope that they could do.
I should also mention that a teacher intervened, too, by throwing her phone at the shooter and tackling him which prevented him from killing more people while the parent was leaving his vehicle and entering the school. That teacher deserves our respect for engaging the shooter, too.
But what stopped the shooter? A parent who was driving by the school on his lunch break who saw the shooter enter the school.
This parent is a legal CCW holder in Oregon, and even with the teacher’s intervention, it took this guy using his .40 caliber pistol shooting the shooter to end the bloodshed.
And here’s the kicker: concealed carry firearm owners can’t legally have carry their gun in that school in Oregon, so if the father hadn’t taken it upon himself to break that law, more innocent people would be dead.
Once again, we see that gun control doesn’t work and that a good guy with a gun is exactly who was needed to save the lives of innocent people.
To deny this fact as an adult is to be willfully ignorant of reality, and that deserves all the contempt in the world.
