You may have heard self-defense trainers say that you rise or fall to the level of your training in a high-stress situation such as fighting for your life.
That’s actually one of the reasons that you’ll hear “reality self-defense” trainers seeming to discount traditional martial arts training which is often focused on the “art,” the cultural history of the art, or the competitive aspect of the art.
And to be clear, there is a point to be made. You want to be cautious about training not to throat punch people or not to kick people in the groin (as competitive martial arts teach) if you’re looking to save your life in a crunch situation. Throat punches and groin kicks can be dangerous in an MMA competition, but on the street? Do what it takes to survive.
But to focus only on that method of comparison misses out on the actual ways that competition (and training for competitions) can help your self-defense training. Because competitions really can help your self-defense ability.
And when you’re talking about firearms, shooting competitions don’t have the drawbacks for self-defense training that martial arts competitions have. After all, in shooting competitions, you’re not shooting at other people (unlike a martial arts competition where you are “fighting” against another live human being).
In fact, Caleb from Patriot Training Center argues that if you aren’t going to shooting competitions, you are wrong. You can hear him give the reasons for that statement in the video below.
Did you watch the video?
Caleb makes some really strong points as to why you should both attend and participate in shooting competitions, so, if you haven’t done that before, you may want to do some research to find out where the nearest competition will be to where you live. You’ll almost certainly have a great time, and if you actually participate, you’ll find your skills with firearms increase because of it.
