Should You Train For A Sub-Second Draw?

People like speed. We like to see people sprinting, racing cars, the fast break in basketball or soccer. As human beings, we just like speed.

But there is an argument to be made for focusing on accuracy and technique. After all, if you can’t get on target to be able to make an accurate shot, if your technique doesn’t facilitate accuracy, then does it matter how quickly that you draw the gun?

There is a saying that I’ve heard applied to firearms training that “Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.” The idea is that you have to focus on doing things right to be most effective, and that makes a lot of sense if you think about it.

But too many people take that phrase and never get to the fast part. They stay with slow which can mean that they never get a chance to make the shot that saves their life.

So, when you’re talking about drawing your gun from your holster, especially from concealed carry, should you focus on speed?

That’s the question that Carter with Patriot Training Center is talking about in today’s video. Watch it below.

Now, if you watched the video (and it’s worth taking the less than six minutes it takes to watch it), then you’ll notice that Carter addresses the speed versus accuracy issue in the video.

And what is his answer? That fast to draw doesn’t necessarily mean having to get off a shot faster.

A fast draw means that you have more time so that you can get on target to make an accurate shot that much sooner.

So, yes, accuracy is absolutely important, and fast to draw will help you to have more of an opportunity to be accurate before the aggressor (the other person) can take a shot at you.

Remember, we’re talking speed of drawing, not necessarily speed to first shot.

And having that extra split second to verify your sites may be the split second that saves your life.
