Should You Trust Your Life To A ‘Cute’ Gun?

People like choices.

I get it. Someone likes McDonald’s for lunch. Someone else prefers Burger King or Chick-Fil-A. All of them have sandwiches. All of them will fill up your stomach with what you pick up from the drive through.

But each of us has preferences.

So, I understand why people like having options of different guns and variations within a specific model such as color.

Some people are good with a basic dark gray or black for their carry pistols (that would be me). Others prefer the tan of an FDE (Flat Dark Earth) pistol. Still others want something more visually “attractive.”

Now, if a variety of color choices to make the gun more visually attractive is a big motivator for you, you’ve probably come across one particular budget pistol maker who offers quite a few more pretty color options than any other company that I’ve seen offers. That company is SCCY.

All things being equal in terms of reliability, shoot ability, concealability, I’m all for people choosing a gun that they like to look at for their carry pistol. At least one reviewer, though, says that, unfortunately, all things are not equal with the SCCY CPX2. Ryan Cleckner writes,

At first glance, the SCCY CPX-2 handgun looks like it could be a strong candidate for those looking for a cheaper option when it comes to handguns.

It’s a sleek-looking pistol that seems to have improved from the major design complaint (the manual safety) of its predecessor–the SCCY CPX-1. The SCCY weighs in at right around 15 oz. and measures out to just above 5″ making it relatively comfortable as a carry gun.

But… that doesn’t necessarily mean that the SCCY CPX pistols are a great option.

A horrible trigger and serious reliability issues make this gun less than optimal.

At any price point, a gun should not sacrifice its basic purpose: to provide the shooter with a safe and a reliable way to fire a gun.

As a former operations sniper, I firmly believe that regardless of cost, a gun must never compromise its fundamental purpose: to offer the shooter a safe and dependable means to fire it.

You can see the trigger, reliability, and materials complaints that he mentioned in the video below.

It’s also worth noting that Cleckner says that shooting this pistol isn’t comfortable. That’s not going to make you want to take it to the range to be proficient with it.

All told, even with the budget price point and the variety of colors available for it, Cleckner recommends that you shouldn’t use this pistol for your everyday carry choice.

Hopefully, SCCY will take Cleckner’s concerns in mind and come up with an updated pistol resolving those issues.
