There is this bizarre idea out there that people should use “less lethal” ammunition in a situation in which they have to pull their firearm, and I’m here to say that this is a terrible idea.
Now, I have no doubt that those who haven’t really analyzed situations in which firearms are used will argue that less lethal ammo should be used to try to prevent people from being killed unnecessarily.
It’s a nice thought, just like the idea that aiming for someone’s legs is what you should do is a nice idea.
And it’s just as unrealistic.
Because the reality of violent situations is that they happen incredibly quickly. They happen, and they’re over, and you wonder how such an awful thing as shooting someone happened in the blink of an eye.
The attacker doesn’t give you the opportunity to hit a thin moving target like a leg to disable them, and different people have different pain tolerances which means that you don’t have the luxury of figuring out if less lethal ammunition will stop the attacker before they are on top of you stabbing you or shooting you.
So, if you are in a situation in which you have to pull your firearm to save your life or the life of another person, you have to use what has the best chance of stopping the threat.
“Less lethal” ammunition just doesn’t stop some threats, and can you take the chance that the one time that you have to pull your gun you’ll be fortunate enough to be dealing with an attacker who has a low pain tolerance? I love my family to much to take that chance when someone else is the one initiating the violence.
But don’t just take my word for it. Caleb with Patriot Training Center reviews law enforcement bodycam footage of a situation in which less lethal ammunition was used. You’ll see what I mean in the video below (Fair warning: the video below does show a person being shot which could be disturbing to some viewers.).
Those officers found themselves in a scary situation dealing with a man who was, it appears to me, dealing with some very real mental health challenges. Unfortunately, the less lethal ammunition didn’t do what it needed to do which placed officers in a potentially life threatening situation.
When it comes down to it, the only times that you are justified in pulling your firearm on another person is in a situation in which serious bodily harm or a person’s life is being threatened. Don’t bet your life on using ammunition that can’t save your life.
