Whether you agree or disagree with Donald Trump’s overall politics, one thing that I can say that he has consistently been better about than previous Presidents in my lifetime is that he is serious about protecting our gun rights.
His administration has been steadily making things better for legal gun owners, and, frankly, that’s the way that it should be. We do have the Second Amendment to the Constitution on our side, after all.
Continuing that trend, the Department of Justice under Trump has taken a city to court over its “assault weapons” ban. Matthew Brown with the Associated Press writes,
The Trump administration sued Denver and its police department on Tuesday seeking to strike down an assault weapons ban that’s been in place for Colorado’s largest city since 1989.
The lawsuit came a day after city officials publicly rejected calls by the Department of Justice to repeal the longstanding local ordinance that makes it a crime to possess assault weapons.
Trump’s Republican administration alleges the ban violates the Constitution’s Second Amendment right to bear arms. The administration also is threatening to sue Colorado over a statewide ban on large-capacity ammunition magazines adopted following a 2012 mass shooting at a movie theater.
“The Constitution is not a suggestion and the Second Amendment is not a second-class right,” acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement on Tuesday. “Denver’s ban on commonly owned semi-automatic rifles directly violates the right to bear arms.”
Good for them. That attitude of the Second Amendment applying across the entirety of the United States is something that anti-2A activists would prefer that you forget.
But we can’t let anyone forget that. It’s foundational to Americans being able to have and keep their other rights.
So, the Second Amendment applies everywhere in the U.S., and if the city of Denver and the state of Colorado actually care about doing the right thing, they’ll make changes to honor and abide by the Second Amendment, too.
