When you’re talking about dealing with a home invasion situation, there are some definite dos and don’ts about the situation.
For example, do make sure that you lock your doors and windows to prevent people from simply walking into your home.
Also, do consider getting a dog. Their barking deters many home invasions.
Don’t, however, expect to handle a home invasion well if you haven’t been training for that possibility.
And don’t break the Indiana Jones Rule (which is don’t bring a knife to a gun fight).
I guess we could also add the rule that the home invasion victim in today’s story broke. Dave Urbanski writes,
A Houston home invasion victim fought an armed burglar Wednesday night, police said — and the victim turned the tables on the crook, taking his gun away and then shooting him dead with it.
Urbanski continues:
Police said one of the burglars pointed a gun at the two tenants, and a fight ensued after one of the tenants knocked the gun out of the burglar’s hands, the station reported.
During the fight, police told KPRC the burglar “pulled out a second gun from his waistband.” But the 20-year-old apartment resident who was fighting the burglar wrestled the gun away from the suspect and shot him, the station said.
The two other burglars ran off by the time police arrived, KPRC said, adding that the third burglar, who was shot during the fight, died from his injuries.
Now, if you’re asking what the rule that was violated in this situation is, it is that you should always be able to get to your gun. After all, you simply never know when you may need it.
Beyond that, you should be very familiar, comfortable, and trained with the use of your firearm in all kinds of situations (not just home invasions). The life that you save may be your own.
In other words, we live in America. Legally get a gun, train with it to proficiency in all kinds of situations, and carry it. You’re important, so it’s important.
