Does The ‘Majority’ Matter When It Comes To Guns?

You certainly hear a lot of talk these days when it comes to democracy, and the talk implies that democracy is a good thing. Maybe you think that’s the case. Maybe you don’t, and we can get into the the the-U.S.-is-a-republic-not-a-democracy debate another time.

The fact of the matter is that most politicians and people pushing for social change argue that they have the moral high ground because they have the support of the majority of people even when that’s not true and even if, as some argue, most people are being gaslighted and manipulated in order to influence their political views.

But does the majority’s opinion matter when it comes to your rights? Put it another way, does democracy matter when it comes to a person’s rights?

The clear, rational answer is, no. Tom Knighton writes,

[Gun rights are] explicit, codified for all time in the Constitution itself.

As such, democracy becomes irrelevant, much like how we don’t decide who gets to vote based on who the majority opts to allow to vote. We don’t decide who has the right to speak freely based on whether the majority approves of that speech.

Knighton continues:

Gun rights are rights. They’re not the subject of debate, regardless of what else is going on around us. We don’t decide our rights based on the popularity of that right. If we did, they become privileges that and be yanked away at the whim of a fickle public.

Knighton is absolutely right on this. The point of a right is that it can’t (justifiably) be taken away from you no latter how unpopular it is to an easily-manipulated group of people, and we should be happy about that. Because once one right can be taken from you, then, so can the rest of them.

  1. The second amendment is the most important right in the Constitution???WITH OUT IT WE WOULD ALL BE SLAVES???YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS?? OR NOT TOO IF YOU SO CHOOSE.YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL ME I CAN’T EXCERSIZE MY SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS??? MAKE SURE YOUR POLITICIANS KNOW IT. THEY ALL HAVE ARMED BODYGUARDS WHAT DO YOU HAVE??HEY JUST ASK HARIET TUBBMAN, AND NAT TURNER AND COLLION NOIR??

    • If the Second Amendment is the most important the Tenth Amendment is the next important …
For those that can’t remember or were never taught in school ; The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
The Bill of Rights sound very prohibitive …

  2. The Right of the People to keep and bear arms is an inherent right we’re born with. The 2nd Amendment protects that Right from being infringed, or, it was supposed to. The reality though, is it’s a Right that has been continually infringed since the ink on parchment was barely dry. It was infringed upon at the local and State levels of government, almost continually, and Local, State and Federal Infringement continues.
One is left with but two paths to pursue. Either we allow some Infringement, by allowing the NFA, GCA and subsequent legislation to stand, in the misguided belief this legislation prevents crime, Or one becomes a 2nd Amendment Absolutist. That all laws and legislation preventing free exercise of the Right we’re born with is Unconstitutional.
Personally, I believe the latter. In that case, distasteful as it is, even Hunter Biden did not commit a Gun Crime, as the law that he violated is Unconstitutional to begin with. There were addictive substances known at the time of the Founders. Laudunum, a derivative of Heroin, was well known, as were Cannabis, and other naturally occurring psychoactive plants and fungii. The Founders did not prohibit theses substances as a barrier to gun ownership, therefore neither should we.
If a violent Felon, is so dangerous, that we must restrict his/her Rights, then they shouldn’t be released into society.

Laws, Do Not Prevent Crime. Laws, only Punish the Transgressor. Most people flow the Law, because it’s convenient to do so, or they can see the reason behind the necessity of the Law, ie Public Safety/Welfare. The mistaken belief that Laws Prevent bad things from happening needs to end. The Law serves only to keep society within accepted values of the society.

  3. As the great founder of the USA and It’s Constitution,
the tree of liberty will need to be watered every so often
by the blood of patriots and traitors.

    I pray:
    God Bless America!!!
God Bless all the upholders of the US Constitution, be they civilian, military (active or retired), government employees (elected and appointed, including the Federal and State Appointees.)
God Bless and totally protect President Trump and all his loved ones, and all his body guards, and all his true and faithful inner circle.
God grant President Trump Great and deep Wisdom, Perception, Discernment and Decision making.
    Amen!!!

  4. Apparently, the law regulating gun-purchase if using drugs is NOT legal, so Hunter’s ‘transgression’ of it is moot! I hadn’t considered this point. None of this is germane with his other legal difficulties! But the Biden DoJ has dragged its feet on all charges so they’ve passed the point of being allowable. OK, this is off topic, so I’ll end it!
