Psychological projection is a real thing.
You see it everyday in all areas of life. People who have a tendency to lie believe everyone else is a liar. People who steal believe everyone steals. It’s commonplace.
That’s not to say that everyone who believes something automatically believes that everyone else is like that. I believe that it’s a good idea to lock your doors at night, not because I think that everyone around me wants to be a thief but because it only takes one, and there is one out there. The statistics say so.
In one area, though, projection seems to have an alarmingly high chance of pointing back at the person doing the projecting: gun control advocates.
People who advocate for gun control to prevent violence seem to have a much higher chance than the average person of wanting to use firearms to hurt other people.
And, sadly, they take those tendencies into real life.
That goes for anti-2A politicians, too, as the people of Virginia unfortunately found out recently. Max Rego writes,
Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D) killed his wife and himself in an overnight murder-suicide at their home, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said Thursday morning.
Davis told reporters it appeared Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Cerina Fairfax, in the unfinished basement of their home in Annandale, Va. He then ran upstairs and shot and killed himself in the primary bedroom using the same firearm, the police chief added.
Now, I don’t bring this story to your attention to make light of it.
This is a horrible situation. It should not have happened.
Having said that, it’s particularly telling that an anti-2A politician had a firearm and used it for the very kind of evil that he projected on to millions of legal gun owners.
He had those kinds of dangerous, evil tendencies. Other people do not.
So, maybe if he had dealt with his own demons, these people would still be alive today, and maybe he would have focused on actually making a difference in the world instead of trying to disarm you and me.
