Guns: The Great Equalizer

Many people seem very impassioned about the idea of a fair fight, that fights need to be equal and balanced and fought within some set of rules, and i’m here to tell you…

I couldn’t disagree more.

At least not when it comes to a fight in which someone can actually get hurt.

In that case, I think that fight should, if at all possible, simply be avoided.

But if it can’t be avoided for whatever reason, then I don’t want a fair fight. I don’t want to be evenly matched with the person attacking me. I don’t want it equal in any way.

I want to have the upper hand at all times. I want to be completely overpowered for the situation. I want to dominate. I want the odds overwhelmingly in my favor.

Why? Because I didn’t start the situation, and hopefully my upper hand will cause them to back down and disengage peacefully. If not, though, I’m determined to be the one going home to my family afterwards.

An older gentleman in Texas seems to have a similar way of thinking, too. Luke McCoy writes,

A suspected burglar was shot and killed early Sunday morning after reportedly breaking into a home in Grand Prairie, prompting a self-defense investigation by local authorities.

McCoy continues:

Police say the homeowner, an elderly male, contacted authorities after an unknown individual forced entry through the rear door of his home. Armed with a hunting rifle, the homeowner confronted the intruder, who was reportedly rummaging through belongings inside the house.

In fear for his life, the homeowner discharged his weapon, striking the suspect. The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene.

This sounds like it was probably a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time on the part of the guy who died. The wrong place being someone else’s house, and the wrong time being when they weren’t invited to go through that person’s personal possessions for things to take home.

Look, it is tragic that someone died in this situation. But it would have been much more tragic if the homeowner, the person whose personal space and possessions were being violated, had been the one killed.

A word of advice for those with I’ll intent: don’t do bad things, and you’re much less likely to have bad things happen to you.
